Coffee Shops in Waco 001: Fabled
Fabled is a Rory Gilmore dream; spend your day with a cozy cup of coffee surrounded by a large collection of books. There’s also a beautiful collection of merchandise featuring puzzles, candles, greeting cards, and more.
The cafe often hosts events like story time, author meetings, and even the occasional Gilmore Girls trivia night. I’m a huge reader and try to support local shops whenever I can so Fabled has contributed many books to my personal library.
I also love the little details like eclectic light fixtures, plants, and a secret Narnia closet inviting you to the children’s space. As they say, long live the book shop!
Ambiance: Because it is half bookstore & half coffee shop, Fabled is very lively. There are always people walking around looking at things or reading their newest finds. I personally find very few things more inspiring than being surrounded by books and other book related products like a collection of candles with QR codes providing access to digital copies of their corresponding books.
They have lots of sections and given their stunning children’s room, there’s usually lots of little ones running around. I really enjoy coming here to play a game with friends, pick out a book and read for a bit, or for a fun date. There’s plenty of isles to browse, knick knacks to look at, and fun drinks to order!
Workability: If you can get a good seat and don’t mind the noise of people chatting, working at Fabled is idyllic. They have a variety of options including cozy sofas, community work tables, bar seating, and a coveted corner desk nook.
I’m writing this from a generous round table my friend and I scored this afternoon, but there are definitely days where I’ve been less lucky. My biggest complaint would be that less than 25% of the seats have accessible outlets so come with your computer charged to guarantee an uninterrupted work session!
Coffee Quality: Fabled’s signature blend comes from Native Sons, a local Waco roaster. While their Bookish Blend, with notes of white grape and dark chocolate, is not my favorite espresso, they always have a fun menu of seasonally themed lattes and a wide selection of teas. I don’t love the flavor notes in an Americano, but can always be convinced to try one of their newest signature lattes.
Right now the line up includes a Winnie the Pooh inspired Hunny Pot Latte and Narnia themed Turkish Delight. They also have a solid selection of snacks including Milk Bottle cookies, salads, and sandwiches. When I find myself here reading or to play a round of Bananagrams with friends, I usually go for a cozy cup of peppermint tea.
My mom would’ve loved taking my brothers and I to Fabled as kids. She always let us pick out books and read to us so there’s a hint of nostalgia seeing families come here together as I read or work on essays as an adult. Is it always the easiest place to find a place to zone in on work? No. Do all coffee shops have to fulfill this need? No. Come grab a drink and take a few hours to catch up on some reading!
